VOWELS SOUNDS

¡Hello Language Learners!


For English students is so important recognize some tools like vowels sounds, consonants sounds, word stress, sentences stress, intonation and connected speech;  that definitely improve your English pronunciation. Therefore we have created didactic and dynamic exercises that foster an effective learning for visitors of our webside.



Besides we have uploaded some of the best links of the several topics mentioned above, in order to provide as much information to our visitors. So we let's start with vowel sounds:

Which are the vowel sounds?

Front vowels:


/iː/  

1.“A front vowel is produced with a forward shift of the tongue from its neutral or rest position.

Sea / s iː/

2.The tongue is positioned forward and slightly lower in the oral cavity, with the side in contract with the teeth laterally and the tip position behind the lower teeth

/I/ 

Swim  /SWIM/











3.“It is pronounced with the tongue positioned forward and high in the oral cavity, also the teeth laterally and the tip positioned behind the lower teeth

   /ɛ/

  Bed
/bɛd/



4. “It is pronounced with the tongue positioned slightly forward and low in the oral cavity, with the tip behind the lower teeth

   /æ/

   Cat 
/kæt/






5. “It is pronounced with the tongue positioned slightly forward and low in the oral cavity, with the tip behind the lower teeth. It is also a long sound

    /ɑː/
    Car
 /kɑː/



Central vowels:

The central vowels is produced with the tongue in its neutral or rest position

1. It is pronounced with the jaw slightly lowered, the lips are unrounded and the vocal folds are vibrating

   /ʌ/

  Sun
/sʌn/





2. “It is pronounced with the jaw slightly open, the lips are unrounded and the vocal folds are vibrating

   /ɒ/

 Lock
/lɒk/








3. “It is pronounced with the tongue back, the mandible is slightly lowered and the lips are rounded”

     /ɔː/ 
    Ball
 /bɔːl/





4. It is pronounced with the tongue body back and elevated, with contact against the upper molars, the lips are usually rounded, also the vocal folds vibrate” 

   /ʊ/

 Book
/bʊk/





5. “It is pronounced with the tongue body and the mandible elevated, the lips are rounded and protruded”.

  /uː/

6. It is pronounced with the tongue slightly above the neutral position with some bunching in the palatal region, also the mandible is slightly lowered and the lips are rounded
